The Cup That Sits Heavy, on Purpose
A yashou bei — "press-hand cup" — is weighted low and thick-walled so it settles into your palm with real presence. You feel the tea's temperature through the porcelain before you taste it. One of these becomes your cup; everyone at the table knows which one is yours.
Six Motifs, One Craft
Bai Cai — a plump Chinese cabbage: the name puns on "hundred fortunes"
Die Lian Hua — butterflies among flowers
Xi Fan Lian — passionflower scrollwork
Zhu Ying — bamboo shadows
Xiang Yun Long — a dragon riding cloud scroll
Shan Shui Yi — a wandering landscape
All six are painted in cobalt and fired inside the glaze (you-zhong-cai, in-glaze decoration) — the pattern sits under a glass-clear layer of glaze, so it cannot wear, chip, or touch your tea. Dehua white porcelain, semi-handmade and capacity, approx. 68 ml.
Why In-Glaze Matters
Cheap "hand-painted" cups are usually overglaze decals: the pattern sits on top, slightly raised, and fades with washing. In-glaze decoration is level with the surface — smooth under the lip, food-safe by construction, and it will look the same in ten years.
How to Use
Warm the cup with the first rinse. Hold it the heavy way: base in the palm, fingers curled around the wall. Pour from the fair cup in one motion.
Care
Hand wash warm. No dishwasher, no microwave. Thick porcelain resists chips, but it is not armor.
A Note on Variation
Semi-handmade means brushwork varies cup to cup; your dragon (or cabbage) will have its own posture. That is the point.
