Scholar's Study Treasures

Solid Wood Calligraphy Paperweight Pair, Brass-Inlaid, Scholar's Desk Accessory with Silk Brocade Box

$49.99

Two bars of dark wood, inlaid with a single brass line. Heavy enough to hold a sheet flat while you work, quiet enough to leave on the desk when you stop. The pair nests into a silk brocade box — for your own desk, or for someone who still writes by hand.

For Paper That Keeps Moving

A sheet of paper has no patience. It curls at the corner, lifts when the window opens, slides while the brush is still loaded. A paperweight is the least glamorous object in a studio and the one you notice most when it is missing.

This pair is cut from solid dark wood, weighted to sit still, and inlaid with a single brass line down the length. Nothing carved, nothing decorated. The weight does the work.

What's in the Box

  • Two paperweights — 35 × 13× 5 cm each

  • Weight per bar: 700 g

  • Silk brocade presentation box

Material, Form & Craft

Material. Solid dark catalpa wood, chosen for tight grain and stability — it holds its shape instead of cupping at the ends. The inlay is brass, set into a cut channel and sanded flush, so the surface is continuous under your hand.

Form. A simple rectangular bar with slightly softened edges. The length covers a full sheet at the top and bottom; the flat face lets you press down with the whole palm when you need to flatten a rolled page.

Craft. Each bar is cut, channelled, inlaid, then finished by hand. The brass sits level with the wood — no raised line to catch a sleeve or scratch a page.

How It's Used

  1. Place one bar across the top edge of the sheet, one across the bottom. For a hanging scroll, use the pair at the lower corners.

  2. For calligraphy, slide a bar down as you work — it holds the written section flat while the ink dries.

  3. For sketching or watercolour, the flat face doubles as a rest for a wet brush.

  4. On a desk with nothing to weigh down, it holds its own: paper, a letter, an open book.

Care

Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. Do not soak, do not use furniture polish with silicone, and keep it out of direct sun — the wood will darken slowly on its own, which is the point. The brass will dull over time; a soft cloth brings the line back. If the wood feels dry after a few years, a drop of oil worked in with a fingertip is enough.

A Note on Natural Variation

Wood grain and colour vary from piece to piece, and the pair is cut from the same stock so the two bars match each other rather than a photograph. Brass will patinate with handling. Small differences in grain are not defects; they are the reason two sets are never identical.
